My Montgomery family first appeared in the records of Amherst County in 1744 when Alexander Montgomery purchased land in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I believe they were Scots-Irish from various items I have read so far.  They probably were descended from the Montgomerys who went from Ayrshire, Scotland, to northern Ireland in the 1600’s after the Battle of Culloden and then came to America in the early 1700’s.  So far, I haven’t found records of them prior to arriving in Amherst County in 1744, but I’ll continue to look!

These posts will be about both the origins of Alexander and also follow his descendants through the Cumberland Gap to Lincoln County and then Casey County, Kentucky.
